Helium希望打造的未来是自以太坊智能合约出现后我们在区块链领域看到的最有野心的愿景：Helium代表着一种全新的大规模部署和管理无线网络的方式，同时极大地削减了成本结构。
Helium区块链是一个基础经济层，支撑着分布式无线电信网络。该网络目前未用于3G/4G/5G网络上的智能手机数据，而是用于低于1GHz频段的低功耗、低带宽的物联网设备。
工作原理
从今日起，所有人都可以轻松购买Helium热点设备（点此订购）。设置步骤非常简单，消费者仅需直接将热点插入电源插座并通过一个简明易用的iOS或安卓应用程序连入一个本地网络（以太网或WiFi）即可。Helium热点的网络覆盖半径可达数英里。因为Helium的预期用途是仅依赖相对少量传感器数据（例如无音频/视频直播）的物联网设备，带宽限制在5 Kbps以下，因此对主机几乎没有影响。
每个Helium热点设备都使用LongFi提供网络覆盖。LongFi是一个Apache许可的在低于1GHz频段运行的开源协议。低频频带，意味着这些无线电波能够轻易穿过混凝土墙和地板。同时，它们的功耗也非常低。使用LongFi协议的物联网设备每比特的电池效率是LTE的数千倍，因此即使使用纽扣电池，这些设备的电池寿命仍然可达数年之久。
通过LongFi协议，任何设备都可以在Helium网络覆盖区域内广播消息并将其消息中继至公共互联网中的指定目的地（通常是网页服务器），成本极低。物联网设备在使用网络前不需与热点运营商建立任何正式的关系，而是以字节为单位向运营商付费。如果一个物联网设备在世界各地移动，则该设备将向许多不同的运营商付费。
这样的成就，其含义之深远，无论怎么强调也不为过。未来，同一物联网设备可以在全球任何一个角落运行，无需与AT&T、沃达丰或任何其他移动运营商签约。如今，现有运营商提供的最具成本效益的物联网数据套餐每个设备每月收费2.50美元，而且只能访问各运营商自身的网络。这对于大多数物联网用例而言太过于昂贵，因为对一个都市区的覆盖通常需要数千台设备。
Helium网络预计将使绝大多数物联网用例的成本降低90-99%，同时大大减少连接障碍，并将解锁众多新的依托于覆盖全球的低成本网络连接的物联网用例。
无线网络的新商业模式
为什么Helium需要区块链？
大规模部署物联网网络的商业模式一直是物联网愿景的致命弱点。在过去的十年里，世界各地已出现许多定制的地方级物联网网络部署，足以供独立研究员开展正式研究，了解哪些模式可行、哪些模式不可行。这些研究得出了Helium早已发现的结论：通过集中管理、自上而下的商业模式对一个新的无线电信网络进行建设、拥有并管理，在经济上是不可行的。
Helium能够运用区块链进行经济激励协调，以远低于集中型企业投入的资本水平进行网络部署。为了解Helium如何针对性地降低现有蜂窝网络的成本，我们需要首先考虑传统模型的当前成本结构：
- 现有网络运营商购买极其昂贵的专有设备。
- 运营商购买/租赁塔楼用地。
- 运营商出资请人安装无线电设备。
- 运营商维护无线电设备。
为提供客户支持、计费等服务， 运营商须维护大量的后端基础设施，并在市场营销上投入大量资金。
上述各项均须在网络能够创收之前到位，所以传统的电信公司的资本密集程度极高。
Helium则将通过重建成本结构而获得成功：
- 消费者花数百美元购买一个100%非专有的商品硬件。由于Helium区块链的经济性，Helium公司的商业模式不依赖于在硬件上赚取利润。
- 消费者享受“免”租。
- 消费者在其家庭或企业中自行取用热点。人工费为0美元。
- 消费者按需启用热点。人工费为0美元。
通过公钥加密，区块链自然地免费管理客户帐户并提供计费服务。Helium区块链可以自由地在各账户间按字节数协调小额付款，无需事先获得批准。新设备无需与电信公司签约，也能够在全球覆盖范围内的任何地方连入网络。这一点，传统的支付模式无法实现。
这一切的结果是Helium网络使得建设、部署和管理成本降低了一个量级。这将形成一个不可逾越的竞争优势：随着中国制造商建设的热点成本的降低，Helium网络实际上将进一步受益。此外，哪怕Helium公司本身会消失，其网络也将继续运行。
用例
这样一个全球性的低成本高电池效率的无线网络，将可以应用在哪些情景中？此处举例说明：
宠物追踪：当前市场上的宠物追踪器还有很大的改善空间。这些追踪器很贵，通常每月至少耗费20美元，电池的寿命只有数小时或数日。Helium驱动的宠物跟踪器的电池寿命将可达数年，并且每月的运行成本可能不到1美元。宠物追踪器的用例市场规模非常庞大，仅在美国就有9000万只狗和9600万只猫。单是这一个用例可能就已经足以在经济上推动整个Helium网络的推广。
智慧城市基础设施： 如果公共垃圾桶附有传感器，可以测量垃圾桶的满载程度，并在必要时通知卫生部门，不是很酷吗？由于电池和成本限制，这在传统的蜂窝网络上是无法实现的。过去几年里，这已经在一些大学校园内进行了试点，并且可以明确观察到人们对此类基础设施的需求。我们预计，一旦各城市了解到这种低成本实时测量城市周围各种数据的方法，物联网传感器的密度就会爆发式增长。想象一下，火灾传感器不再需要硬线连接，每个交叉路口的交通传感器可以为紧急服务进行智能导航，甚至可以智能控制交通信号，减少行程耗时。我们对智能城市的愿景，正是建立在Helium网络这样的先进发展的基础之上。
微型移动设备： Lime/Bird电动滑板车或Jump自行车在电池耗尽后，经常会丢失。LongFi芯片耗电极少，因此电动车公司可以为LongFi芯片装配第二枚专用钮扣电池，保证在主电池电量耗尽后很长一段时间里都能在野外找到滑板车和自行车，还可以实现在Helium网络位点之外传输数据，最终设备将不再需要蜂窝联网。Helium今日已宣布Lime目前正在旧金山测试这些电动车芯片。
智能药瓶： 患者药物依从成本仅在美国就高达数千亿美元。如果有能够提醒患者及其看护人及时用药的智能药瓶，自然是一个很好的解决方案。根据目前的设计，患者（其中许多是老年人）需要将他们的“智能”药瓶连接到家庭WiFi或手机蓝牙，因为将每个药瓶都连接到蜂窝网络的成本太高了。而目前的现实情况是：难度高，不实际，用户体验差。但是，与LongFi兼容的芯片和Helium网络上的数据的成本非常低廉，智能药瓶可以省去以往导致患者依从性降低的高难度的初始设置过程。有了Helium，患者不需要进行任何智能药瓶的配置或设置。一个更智能、更具成本效益的无线网络，正在切实、持续地拯救生命。
Helium网络的用例还有更多，其中大部分还留待人们的想象。
虽然Helium网络始于LongFi，但这样的部署也可以作为其他无线网络类型（LTE、5G等）的发展蓝图。使得Helium网络能够通过LongFi在物联网连接领域与大型电信网络运营商进行不对称竞争的优势，也同样将推动Helium网络进军高端市场，在更高带宽的产品上进行竞争。
