멀티코인의 GP로 새롭게 합류한 Vinny Lingham
저는 Vinny Lingham(트위터, 링크드인)을 멀티코인 캐피털의 새로운 GP로 환영할 수 있게 되어 굉장히 기쁩니다. 비니는 블록체인에서 신원확인 솔루션을 제공하는 시빅(Civic)의 CEO이며 기프트(Gyft) 및 욜라(Yola)를 창립하고 CEO를 역임했습니다.
비니는 암호자산 분야에 있어 비즈니스와 기술을 모두 이해하는 아주 생각이 깊은 사람입니다. 또 암호자산 생태계에서 굉장히 널리 알려져 있고 따르는 사람이 가장 많은 사람 중 하나이기도 합니다. 멀티코인 캐피털의 투자 위원회에서 비니는 딜 소싱에 있어 큰 역할을 맡아줄 것입니다.

암호자산 투자의 민주화
2017년은 암호자산 거래와 투자가 그림자 밖으로 나와 기술계의 주요 관심사로 떠오른 해였습니다.
제 회사 시빅(Civic)이 올해 6월 토큰 판매를 진행했을때 5만명의 사람들이 토큰을 구매하기 위해 줄을 섰으며 시빅은 총 $3300만의 판매 금액을 달성했습니다.
시빅은 세계적으로 수천명의 사람들을 대상으로 할 만큼 큰 범위의 판매행사를 진행할 수 있는 몇 안되는 기업 중 하나입니다. 우리는 모든 구매자들이 시빅 계좌를 만들어 신청하도록 하였으며 그 결과 사람들의 반복 구매로 인해 다른 사람이 구매 기회를 얻지 못하는 경우를 어느 정도 줄일 수 있었습니다.
약 만 명의 사람들이 시빅의 토큰 판매에 참여하였으며 이는 구매자의 수가 몇 백명 가량 되는 다른 기업의 경우와 비교해보면 아주 큰 차이입니다. 이로 인해 우리는 시빅의 제품에 대한 네트워크 효과를 형성하고 우리가 구축하는 것에 참여하고자 하는 사람들과 소통할 수 있었습니다. 사람들의 열정이 얼마나 대단한지 우리는 토큰 소유자의 네트워크가 제안하는 모든 기회와 방향을 탐구하는데 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 이들은 우리 네트워크의 일부로서 네트워크의 구축과 성공에 기여하고 싶어합니다.
그 이래로 ICO와 토큰 판매를 통해 모인 자금의 비중은 놀라울 정도입니다. 올해만 해도 약 $30억이 넘는 자금이 모였습니다. 저는 이러한 추세가 새로운 금융 혁신의 시작일 뿐이며 토큰이 세상을 집어삼키고 있다는 것을 여러 차례 강조하여 설명해왔습니다.
저는 특히나 지난 6개월간 암호자산 분야에서 일어나는 아주 배타적인 거래 흐름을 볼 수 있는 큰 행운을 누렸으며 짧은 시간 안에 눈이 튀어나올 정도로 큰 수익을 가져다준 굉장한 투자를 진행했습니다. 하지만 이제 사람들이 아주 많이 유입되면서 암호자산에 대한 투자는 깊은 주의를 기울이고 기술과 시장, 팀 등 투자의 성공에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 다양한 요소들을 이해하지 못한다면 전문가들만 돈을 벌고 아마추어들은 벌지 못하는, 마치 스포츠와 같은 양상을 띄기 시작했습니다...
유틸리티 토큰 판매에서 거둔 성공과 우리가 배운 점을 종합해서 저는 시빅이 어떻게 하면 금융의 다른 분야를 민주화할 수 있을지, 그리고 더 나아가 사회를 민주화할 수 있을지에 대해 생각해보았습니다. 그 방법 중 하나는 투자 기회의 접근성과 가용성을 더 큰 시장으로 넓히는 것입니다.
미국과 세계의 여러 법규에 따라 투자 펀드에 대한 크라우드 펀딩과 자산 집합화는 엄격한 규제를 받고 있며 대규모로 진행하는데 드는 비용이 큽니다. 이로 인해 투자 펀드는 부의 중간값 범위에 해당하는 사람들 수천명으로부터 자금을 모으기보다는 고액순자산보유자(HNWI)에게 집중하게 됩니다. 즉 매우 부유한 사람만이 최고의 투자기관에 접근할 수 있게 되는겁니다.
미국을 비롯한 세계 여러 국가에는 부와 지식을 결부시키는 법규들이 있습니다. 예를 들어 미국에는 특정 투자 제품들은 ‘전문투자자’에게만 제공할 수 있도록 규제하는 법이 있습니다.
미국에서는 주거주지의 가치를 제외하고 백만달러의 순자산을 가지고 있거나 최근 2년간 최소 20만달러의 수익을 (또는 배우자가 있을 경우 도합 30만달러의 수익) 냈으며 당해에도 같은 금액을 벌 것이라는 예측이 가능해야만 전문투자자로 인정받을 수 있습니다.
이는 저축해놓은 돈은 있지만 축적해둔 부는 없는 이십대의 청년들은 펀드와 회사에 대한 투자에서 제외된다는 뜻입니다. 그들의 재정적 수준이 투자에 대한 법적 프레임워크에 규정된 조건에 부합하지 않아 투자에 따른 재무리스크를 감수할 만큼의 수준이 되지 못한다고 여겨지기 때문입니다.
물론 이런 법이 존재하는 데에는 타당한 이유가 있습니다. 암호화폐가 무엇인지 전혀 모르기에 하룻밤 사이에 부를 거머쥐게 해주겠다는 사기에 속아넘어갈 가능성이 큰 무지한 투자자(나이드신 분들처럼요)를 보호하기 위해서입니다. 그러나 이러한 법으로 인해 의도하지 않은 결과가 나타나기도 합니다.
제가 말하고 싶은 것은 개인의 부와 수익으로 개인의 지식이나 수준을 판단할 수는 없다는 것입니다. 지식은 경험과 연구, 참여를 통해 쌓입니다. 만약 축적한 부와 수익에 따라 사람들이 고수익 투자 기회를 잡는 것을 제한한다면 세계의 지니 계수는 계속해서 증가하고 남아프리카와 같은 국가의 청년들은 결국 불평등에 저항하며 들고 일어나 정부를 전복시키게 될 것입니다.

멀티코인 캐피털 팀과 지난 몇 달간 암호자산을 논의하면서 저는 아주 많은 것을 배웠습니다. Tushar Jain과 Kyle Samani는 암호자산 생태계에 대한 심오한 시각을 갖고 있으며 굉장히 인상깊은 통찰력을 보여주었습니다.
암호자산 투자의 민주화에 대해 논의한 끝에 우리는 시빅의 신원확인 기술을 통해 완전한 규제 준수를 보장하여 법규를 따르도록 하면 대규모의 암호자산 투자도 가능하겠다는 결론을 내렸습니다. 어떤 계획을 세우고 있는지 지금 단계에서 자세히 언급하기는 어렵지만 내년 초 쯤에는 우리가 세운 계획에 대해 발표할 수 있기를 바랍니다.
