오늘 여러분께 ‘멀티코인 캐피털’을 발표하게 되어 매우 기쁩니다.
멀티코인 캐피털은 비트코인, 이더리움 및 여러 소규모 대안화폐를 포함한 유동 암호자산에 전문적으로 투자하는 펀드사입니다. 멀티코인은 투자자에게 공공 시장 유동성을 갖춘 벤처 경제를 제공합니다.
배경
투샤와 저는 10년 전 NYU에서 처음 만났습니다. 둘 다 금융을 공부하고 있었지만 항상 기술에 더 관심이 많았습니다.
아래 그림은 2010년 당시 저희가 주고받았던 이메일 캡쳐본입니다.
저희 둘은2008년부터 2012년까지 NYU에 다녔습니다. 당시 포스퀘어, 그룹온, 인스타그램, 트위터 등 1세대 모바일 앱은 성공을 거두고 있었죠. 저희는 테크에 푹 빠져 있었습니다. 졸업 전 저는 금융의 길을 포기하고 엔지니어링의 길로 들어섰으며 오스틴에 위치한 헬스IT회사인 베르사스위트에서 영업과 상품관리직을 맡았습니다. 투샤 또한 졸업 후 오스틴으로 건너와 베르사스위트에 입사했습니다.
졸업한지 1년이 지났을 때 투샤와 저는 베르사스위트를 퇴사하고 각자 창업을 했습니다. 저는 프리스틴(의료업계 종사자를 위한 구글 글래스 앱), 투샤는 이페이션트파인더(전자 의료 기록 데이터를 활용해 환자를 찾아 임상실험에 참여시키는 혁신적인 모델)를 세웠죠. 당시 저희는 아주 작은 아파트에서 룸메이트였지만, 따로따로 각자의 회사를 세웠습니다.
저희 둘 다 벤처 캐피털에 수백 만 달러를 유치했습니다. 나름대로 재미있고 재미있고 의미있는 사업을 이뤄나갔습니다.
저희는 2013년부터 암호자산에 투자해 왔습니다. 그리고 2016년 초부터 이더리움 기술의 미래 비전과 잠재력을 보면서 이더리움에 깊은 확신을 갖게 되었습니다. 2016년 여름, 다오(DAO) 사태 당시에도 저희는 이더리움 투자에 몰두했습니다.
2017년 이더리움이 급격히 인기를 얻자 저희는 이더리움에서 얻은 수익을 가지고 좀 더 사변적인 크립토 프로토콜에 투자하기 시작했습니다. 이런 투자에 대해서 친구들에게 이야기하거나 저희가 하는 투자와 관련된 글을 1-2시간정도 읽고 나면, 친구들이 하는 질문이 다 똑같았습니다.
“어느 암호자산 펀드에 투자하면 돼?”
그렇게 탄생한 펀드가 바로 멀티코인 캐피털입니다.
기업가로서 투샤와 저는 제품시장적합성이 얻어지면 바로 시장에 뛰어들어야 한다는 것을 본능적으로 알고 있었습니다.
저희는 5월 초 멀티코인 사업에 본격적으로 착수했고 2017년 8월 1일 첫 번째 모금 완료를 했습니다.
펀드 세부사항
멀티코인은 암호자산의 가장 촉망되는 이용 사례를 찾아내고, 관련된 팀, 프로젝트, 커뮤니티를 조사합니다. 그리고 직접 경쟁적인 프로젝트들에 투자함으로써 리스크를 헤지합니다. 현재 멀티코인은 25개의 유니크한 암호자산을 보유하고 있으며 그 덕분에 멀티코인은 가장 다변화된 암호자산 펀드가 될 수 있었습니다.
멀티코인의 투자 명제는 단순합니다.
블록체인은 전 세계적으로 다양한 산업에 걸쳐 수조 달러의 경제활동에 영향을 미칠 것입니다. 암호자산은 그 공급자가 고정되어 있기 때문에 수요가 오를수록 가격도 오릅니다. 이렇게 변덕스럽고 빠르게 진화하는 자산에 대한 노출을 관리하는 가장 효과적인 방법은 바로 펀드의 다변화입니다.
멀티코인은 투자자들에게 세 가지의 가치를 제공합니다.
1) 기초 연구 - 멀티코인은 ‘기술 우선’ 방식을 활용합니다. 백서를 깊이 연구하고, 해당 기술, 경제, 게임이론 등을 조사합니다. 또 세계 주요 상업 분야를 재평가할 수 있는 프로젝트와 프로토콜을 찾아냅니다. 그리고 멀티코인의 양적 및 질적 지표를 충족하는 프로토콜에 투자합니다. 마지막으로 시장을 모니터링하며 새로운 정보가 등장하거나 시장 상황이 변화하면 이에 따라 보유자산을 조절합니다.
2) 보안 - 멀티코인은 모든 프라이빗 키를 콜드스토리지로 에어갭 컴퓨터에 보관합니다. 즉 말 그대로 돈을 컨트롤하는 프라이빗 키는 인터넷 상에 절대 유출되지 않습니다. 또한 멀티코인은 본사가 관리하는 모든 자산에 대해 자체적으로 다인증 기능을 지원합니다. 이 중에는 프로토콜 수준에서 다인증을 자체적으로 지원하지 않는 자산에도 적용됩니다.
3) 포트폴리오 재구성 - 멀티코인은 포트폴리오를 매달 재구성합니다. 콜드스토리지 방식과 결합하면, 포트폴리오의 재구성은 훨씬 더 복잡하고 어려운 작업입니다.
멀티코인의 첫 번째 모금에 함께해 주신 저명한 투자자 두 분을 소개해 드리고자 합니다.
데이비드 존슨 씨는 2012년에 비트코인 투자를 시작했습니다. 2013년 비트엔젤스라는 최초의 비트코인 엔젤투자그룹을 공동창립했으며 이 그룹은 전 세계적으로 500명 이상의 회원을 보유할 정도로 성장했습니다. 그 후 2013년 ‘Dapp 일반이론’이라는 백서를 발간하여 다른 블록체인 상에서 비트코인과 같은 프로젝트를 구상하는 데 필요한 모델을 설명했습니다(추후 이 백서는 이더리움 포함 다수의 암호화폐의 기초가 되었습니다). 2014년 댑스펀드라는 최초의 암호자산 벤처 펀드를 설립했고 이 펀드는 24개월만에 8배까지 수익이 늘었습니다. 그 후 팩텀(1억 5천만달러 이상 가치의 토큰을 보유한 유명한 암호자산 프로젝트)을 공동창립했으며 현재 회장으로 재임중입니다. 약 40명의 직원을 보유하고 있는 팩텀은 총 9백만달러의 벤처 자금을 유치했습니다. 존슨 씨는 또한 투자자이자 멀티코인 캐피털 제너럴 파트너십 이사회에 이사로 활동하고 있습니다.
조슈아 베어 씨는 연쇄 창업가이자 오스틴 최대 코워킹 스페이스 및 테크 인큐베이터인 캐피털 팩토리의 창립자 겸 이사입니다. 베어 씨는 캐피털 팩토리 계열의 벤처펀드 여러 개를 운영하고 있으며, 피치북에 따르면 2013년 이후 텍사스에서 가장 활발하게 활동하는 초기 단계 투자가입니다.
투샤와 저는 지금까지 그 어떤 것에도 이만큼 흥분되는 순간은 없었습니다. 블록체인은 세계 경제 활동의 엄청난 부분을 재구성할 것이며 새로운 승리자를 많이 창출할 것입니다. 저희 인생에 있어서도 가장 결정적인 기술적 전환점을 맞이할 수 있게 되어 대단한 행운이라고 생각합니다.
