最初に楽しんだインターネット対応アプリケーションは、Napsterだったと記憶しています。1999年では、私は毎秒2.96 KBの速さで曲をダウンロードしていました。良い日は、毎秒3.13KBになります。
音楽は過去20年間、西洋のインターネット上で最も検閲されたコンテンツです。検閲の波は、会場間で何度も繰り返してきました。おおよその時系列の順番に、これらのサービスはNapster、Morpheus、Kazaa、Limewire、Piratebay、YouTube、SoundCloud、Spotify、TurnTable.fm、8tracks、Apple Musicなど、多くのサービスが含まれました。
興味深いことに、そのサービスを時間とともに見ると、最も顕著な傾向は、規制されていないサービス（Napster、torrents）から、厳密に制御されたSpotify、Apple Musicへと移行しています。
現在、音楽の大部分はこれらの制限された場所で提供されています。これらの制御された場所の特徴は、ContentID and Gracenoteのようなツールを通じて、積極的な検閲（こことここ）です。これらのツールは善意で開発されたものですが、権利者がその権利を悪用して創造性を潰してしまうことで有名になりました。

ビットコインは、インターネット上で最初の検閲に強いメディアでした。ビットコインは、分散型であるため、検閲に強いのです。ビットコインは、限定された形式の検閲に強いコンテンツ送信にのみ使用でき、ポイントAからポイントBにお金を移行します。
ここ数年、インターネット上のあらゆるメディアを動かすための分散型サービスが爆発的に増えています。The Graph（GraphQLを使用して公開のデータをクエリする）、Livepeer（動画をトランスコードする）、Arweave（永久的にデータを保存する）、Helium（分散型ワイヤレスネットワーク）、Torus（Web2のログインを活用する分散型のアイデンティティ）など、一握りですが投資してきました。
