Today I’d like to announce that two of our longest standing members of our investment team, Spencer Applebaum (LinkedIn, Twitter) and Shayon Sengupta (LinkedIn, Twitter), have been promoted to Investment Partner.
Both of them have done great work in finding lucrative trades in public markets, and in sourcing and winning competitive deals in private markets. But most importantly, both have also worked closely with many of our founders over the past several years to help them succeed. Teams consistently rave about how they roll up their sleeves, do the work, help shape strategy, and navigate delicate situations when they arise. To say the least, they have proven themselves as not only capable investors but also as capable operators.
Although their titles have changed, their core focus will not: they will continue to lead deals for the firm and help founders with their most pressing challenges.
In an industry as fast paced and dynamic as crypto, I find that a team with deep experience is a significant advantage. And with so many new protocols and emerging technologies, deep thinkers like Spencer and Shayon—who have persevered through multiple market cycles—are well positioned to help founders—and thus Multicoin—succeed.
Additionally, I’ve always believed in the importance of building a team that is not only knowledgeable but also committed to the industry. Spencer and Shayon have been with us for five and three years respectively, and have demonstrated that in spades. We have had low turnover across both our partnership and investment team, and when individuals work together for years they develop a level of familiarity and trust that cannot be recreated or replicated quickly. This familiarity allows for faster decision-making, better communication, and ultimately better returns.
Spencer and Shayon help further round out our investment team, and ensure that we can continue to make investments and help founders in our own deeply personal, hands-on style for years ahead.
Please join me in congratulating and recognizing them, and feel free to reach out to Spencer and Shayon to chat about deals or the market more broadly.
